Hazel and Bryn have shot off for a Hamilton Island internship working for Explore Group Australia! Check out what they have to say about their time so far on the island and the never ending hunt for Nemo…
What is your role and what are your responsibilities?
Hazel: My roles switch between Snorkel Guide and Boat Host which includes guiding groups around different snorkeling spots in the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef as well as looking after guests.
Bryn: My role is Snorkel Guide. This consists of guiding groups of guests around different locations at the Great Barrier Reef. Also, trying to find Nemo is a massive part of my job.
How is it working on an island?
Hazel: Working on an island is pretty cool! Sometimes it can be difficult since we have to get all our supplies from the mainland.
Bryn: Living on an island is a big change from living on land, ocean is all you can see! It definitely does help for everyone to get to know each other and where all the best ice cream shops are.
What has been the best thing about your internship so far?
Hazel: The best thing about internship so far has been moving to an awesome location and getting to meet new and interesting people from all over the world every day!
Bryn: The part of my internship in Australia so far has been the friendships I have created along the way and being able to snorkel everyday with turtles is a massive highlight.
Any tips for future students thinking of studying at QRC?
Hazel:10/10 would recommend, even if you’re not planning your whole future around tourism, it still helps you get out into the work force and gain experience. You also meet so many cool people along the way.
Bryn: I would say, to any future QRC students that want to travel the world or experience other cultures then definitely this internship is the best option! Internship shows you the path you want to go down and areas of work that interest you most.
How did the internship managers help you with your placement?
Hazel: The internship team were amazing, I had a chat with KP to discuss all of my interests and the types of jobs I wanted to do. From there she suggested a few companies that were all up my alley which was really helpful. It can be daunting because you have so many options for internship, but the internship team definitely help you find the best fit.
Bryn: Both KP and Adam helped us through the choosing of our internship placements. They identified our likes and dislikes and formed a good path to go down that were biggest interests.
What advice would you give those about to go on internship?
Hazel: Don’t be scared to go big. If you love to travel then this is an awesome excuse to explore beautiful locations around the world and get paid to do it too!!
Bryn: Strive for excitement, experience new things and face your fears. You will always remember the memories made on internship.
