Alanah’s an Adventure Tourism Management student from QRC who’s currently interning with RealNZ in Te Anau. She’s loving life underground, guiding tours through the magical Te Anau Glowworm Caves. With her positive attitude and willingness to jump into anything, Alanah’s really making the most of her internship and helping create awesome experiences for every visitor.
What’s a day in the life of Alanah on internship look like?
Typically, our day begins with the first tour of the morning, where we set off on a scenic 30-minute cruise across the stunning Lake Te Anau, making our way to the breathtaking Glow Worm Caves. The journey itself is a peaceful and amazing experience, offering an opportunity to take in the surrounding of the beautiful lake before we reach the Glow Worm Caves.
Once we arrive at the caves, we divide the group into smaller groups of around 12 people each to ensure a more personalized and safe experience. Depending on your assigned group number, you’ll either be tasked with leading safety briefings or giving presentations about the caves and the glow worms. If you’re handling the safety briefings, you’ll ensure everyone understands the necessary precautions before venturing into the cave. If you’re doing a presentation, you’ll share fascinating details about the glow worms and the unique environment that exists within the cave.
Once the groups are ready, we lead them into the caves, where the magic of the glow worms comes to life in the darkness. As the day progresses, we rotate the group numbers, so that everyone has the opportunity to experience both the safety aspect and the educational role, ensuring a fair and balanced distribution of responsibilities.
Throughout the day, we run up to 10 tours, each providing a unique experience for both the visitors and the guides. By the end of the day, everyone gets the chance to engage with different parts of the experience, making for a dynamic and rewarding workday.
What was a highlight from your internship?
One of the standout highlights of my experience has undoubtedly been working on the vessels and acquiring a wide range of new skills related to crewing on the different boats. Each day brings something new as I learn the ropes of boat handling, navigation, and the coordination required to run smooth and efficient tours. From operating the vessel to ensuring the safety and comfort of our guests, there’s always something to challenge me and keep me engaged.
Equally exciting is the opportunity to work in such a unique and beautiful environment, particularly within the cave system. The caves themselves are an incredible setting, and being part of the team that brings visitors through this thrilling experience. The combination of natural beauty and the fascinating glow worm ecosystem makes each day feel different from the last. The ever-changing dynamics of the caves add a sense of adventure, making it both a challenging and enjoyable place to work.
How did the internship managers help you find your internship position?
I explored a variety of different options and had detailed conversations with the managers responsible for recruiting, working closely with them to better understand the role and how I could best fit into the position. Through these discussions, I gained valuable insights and was able to position myself effectively for the opportunity, ultimately helping me secure the role. Their guidance and support throughout the process were instrumental in making this happen.
Any tips or advice for students preparing for internship?
It’s important to consistently put yourself forward and actively seek opportunities to be involved in what’s happening around you. Taking the initiative shows that you’re eager to contribute and grow in your role. Most companies appreciate someone who demonstrates enthusiasm and a willingness to take on new challenges. By proactively asking to be part of projects or tasks, you not only gain valuable experience but also show your commitment to moving forward and advancing in your position. This kind of proactive attitude is often noticed and can help open doors for further opportunities within the company.
What is one thing you have learnt on internship?
The ability to adapt to the varying needs of different customers is crucial in this role. This job involves a physical component, as visitors are often required to bend down or navigate stairs, which can be challenging for some. Additionally, many customers may feel apprehensive about the caves or even the boat rides, especially if they have a fear of enclosed spaces or water. Being able to recognize these concerns and provide reassurance is an essential part of the job. Whether it’s offering a calming word, guiding them through their fear, or simply providing a bit of extra support when needed, ensuring that everyone feels safe and comfortable enhances their overall experience. It’s not just about the physical environment but also about connecting with people on an emotional level and helping them feel at ease in unfamiliar or intimidating situations

What’s the best thing about living in Te Anau?
The atmosphere here is incredibly laid-back, especially compared to bustling tourist hotspots like Queenstown. Despite a steady flow of visitors, the pace remains relaxed, which allows for a more peaceful and enjoyable experience. One of the great things about this area is the variety of opportunities it offers, from taking the boat out on the water to riding jet skis or exploring the beautiful walking trails. The stunning scenery, with its breathtaking views and serene landscapes, provides the perfect opportunity for any outdoor activity. It’s a refreshing change of pace.

Being certified in first aid has made it easier for the team to rely on me in situations where quick thinking and preparedness are required, ensuring a safer environment for both customers and staff. It’s one of those qualifications that has really enhanced my ability to contribute and has opened up more opportunities within the company.
What excites you most about the rest of your internship journey?
