Internship at the Reef?

Sammy is currently completing her internship in Cairns working for Explore Co as a cruise attendant on boats at the Great Barrier Reef. Organising guest trips, hanging out the correct snorkeling gear, working with the Skipper and Deckhand to run the boat and general customer service, she is loving every minute of it! One of her biggest high lights so far is being able to see the amazing marine life every single day and working with a young, fun crew to share the whole experience with – also being able to explore other parts of Great Barrier Reef on her days off too.

Internship manager – KP – set up the internship process between Experience Co and Sammy which led to Zoom interviews, a primed CV and a job offer. Working on boats out at sea all day every day has taught Sammy to have a very strong stomach but after the first couple of weeks getting used to it, she has a new found love for all things boats! She got the opportunity to scuba dive for the first time the other day, it was so warm she didn’t even need her wetsuit on, the beauty of the reef came into a whole new light and it’s something she plans on doing again soon!

Advice for QRC students about to go out on internship:
Keep a positive mindset, it can be hard to push past the hard bits, but it makes it all worth it in the long run – and don’t forget to enjoy it!

Advice for anyone deciding to study with QRC?
I was unsure about what I wanted to do with my future and QRC gave me the chance to explore my options, I knew travelling and exploring would be part of QRC because of the internship opportunities.
