If you want to wake up by the sea and work in the surf every day, read on. Tom McAtmney is currently living out his dream internship position with Surf Camp Australia. Find out more!
Where are you doing your internship and what is your role?
I am doing my internship at Surf Camp Australia, working as a surf instructor for beginners. The camp is in a tiny town called Gerroa, about two and a hlaf hours south of Sydney.
What does a day in the life of Tom look like?
First I wake up, smash a bowl of cereal, and put on my wetsuit. The team and I drive down to the beach and organise the surfboards for the lessons beginning at 8.30-9ish. Depending on the day, I will instruct two to four lessons (4-8 hours in the water). In between, I’ll have lunch and a nap in the sun. At the end of the day I have a very long shower and chat with guests over dinner.
How did the internship team help with your placement?
The internship team was very helpful. KP was always answering my dumb questions and made time for helping me whenever I needed support.
What advice would you give to students looking for their dream internship?
I would advise students to plan as far in advance as possible so you can relax as internship period gets closer. Id you are going overseas, sort out everything you can ASAP. For example, apply for a TFN a couple months before leaving so you can get paid correctly and right away.
