Phoebe Burling and Mackenzee Campbell have jumped ditch for their internship, working with Explore Group on Hamilton Island. Between Boat Hosting and Snorkel guiding, the girls are loving every minute of it! Phoebe has done a wee write up for us below, check it out!
“I am lucky enough to be working in one of the most beautiful places in the world while doing a job I love”
Where are you doing your internship?
I am doing my internship on Hamilton island, Australia where I am working as a snorkel guide and a boat host for Explore Group.
What are your main responsibilities?
My main responsibilities as a boat host include; looking after the guests from the moment they board the boat to the moment they leave. I check each guest individually off the daily manifest, provide morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea as well as other duties. When I am a snorkel guide my responsibilities include setting up all gear and equipment that will be needed during the day, doing a snorkel assessment on all guests, executing a snorkel brief before jumping in the water and leading the guests around the reef. I mainly work on a sailing boat so I will also help with putting the head and main sail up and down.
How did QRC help with your placement?
Adam and KP made the connection between explore and myself and were great at guiding me through the interview process and agreeing that this company was a good fit for me. They were also great at helping me with any questions or problems I had during this process.
What have you enjoyed most about your internship?
The thing that I have enjoyed the most about my internship has definitely been the amount of personal growth I have been able to achieve. I am lucky enough to be working in one of the most beautiful places in the world and doing a job that I love, that it has been easy to push myself to learn new skills every day.
Any takeaways from your internship so far?
My biggest takeaway from my internship experience is how important it is to put yourself out there and be open to new places, people and opportunities.
What advice would you give future students preparing for internship?
My advice to future internship students is to not be afraid to go after the job you really want, even if it is overseas or in a new place, if you are passionate about it then just go for it!.
Anything else?
I can say that QRC is an amazing place to learn a lot, grow a lot, see and do a lot. QRC is a great place that provides awesome opportunities, such as getting to do internship on Hamilton island/ The Great Barrier Reef 😊
