Our Hospitality Management 2022 Scholarship Recipient student has landed on her feet as a Receptionist for Luxury Resort Matakauri Lodge – one of three Robertson Lodges! Find out more about Hinekehu’s internship and the exciting things she’s been up to at work.
Where are you doing your internship?
I am working in front office reception at Matakauri Lodge, one of the three Robertson Lodges.
What are your main responsibilities at work?
I ensure all our guests have an unforgettable experience and the best stay possible. Pre-arrival I organise guest transfers & activities, making sure we’ve dotted all the I’s and crossed all the T’s so everything goes smoothly. On arrival welcoming them, giving tours of the property, concierge services, right through to their departure & billing, lastly a fond farewell. Reception is the main communication hub for all departments. I also train our front office staff.
How did the internship team help with your placement?
Adam was a big help, from perfecting my CV to interview skills then based on my goals he gave me a range of options. Once I made my choices he arranged interviews with some of the top luxury lodges in the country.
What have you enjoyed most about your internship?
The amazing guests we have. Working at a small boutique lodge you get to know the guests personally and knowing the positive impact I’ve had has definitely been a highlight. I love going on famils with our activity providers, learning first hand the guest experience enhances the recommendations I give.
We have a small team so no days are the same, I really enjoy helping in F&B or as a porter when needed, of course being on a famil meeting the regions top winemakers or in a helicopter somewhere is incredible.
I really enjoy working for Robertson Lodges, our Lodge manager is fantastic and from whom I’ve learnt so much. We’ve had a few Company heads come down during my internship and you’re not just another employee, they take the time to talk to you and get to know you.
