Over The Top Helicopters dream internship!

Declan has recently completed his internship with Over The Top Helicopters stating that it was “The best job I’ve ever had!” Working as a crew member for the iconic Queenstown company he has hosted everyone from celebrities to hunters and experienced some of New Zealand’s most remote landscapes.

Where are you doing your internship and what is your role?

  • I’m working for Over The Top Helicopters as Helicopter Crew. I have done anything and everything from working at New Zealand’s smallest high country station hosting corporate groups, wealthy individuals, and some celebrities. I’ve also had the chance to help out loading hunters in the backcountry. As well as lots of trips to glaciers, Fiordland, mountains in the Whakatipu basin and countless local trips to McConichies High Country Station (Over The Top’s exclusive event venue situated at a renovated goldminer’s cottage built in the 1860’s).

What does a day in the life of a helicopter crew member look like?

  • My days change vastly depending on the weather, and what bookings we have on. Some days I will be writing standard operating procedures, editing prices on our web channels and booking in clients. While on other days I will be hot loading helicopters, refueling, and helping out in the hangar. The best days however are the days I get to go out on trips with guests. I have done days up at our exclusive golf course on Cecil Peak helping load, unload and manage corporate groups, as well as some days cooking and helping host guests at the High Country Station.

What has been a highlight of your internship?

  • The highlight of my internship would have to be one of the flights I got to do to Fiordland where we land on glaciers, at alpine lakes and flew over Milford Sound. I was onboard to help cook for the guests when we ended the trip at the High Country Station and helped the Pilot to look after his group of clients.

What has been a key takeaway from your internship?

  • I have learned so much on my internship, including booking skills, how to write SOPs, and I have now got a good background on how both the tourism industry works and an intro into how the aviation industry works as well.
