The QRC Graduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality is a one year programme of specialist industry study, research and work experience.

Students learn the management skills and supervisory knowledge required to manage tourism and hospitality businesses, market and sell tourism and hospitality products and understand the strategic, regulatory and policy framework of the industry.

Through the fully paid workplace internship, students gain valuable real-world experience and a direct link to industry.

This Level 7 programme consists of three terms plus a fully paid 3-month industry internship and research project.

During terms one, three and four you will study theory focused on management strategies and practices. There will be approximately 20 hours on campus per week and students are expected to undertake further self-directed study hours.

During the internship (term two) you will be placed in recognised paid employment within a hospitality operation such as a hotel or restaurant, or a tourism business for a minimum of 200 hours industry training.

Note: no Recognition of Prior Learning, cross credit or credit transfer is available for this programme.

The ability to put theory into practice in paid employment is one of the highlights of an education at QRC.

For students of the Graduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management, it’s a valuable opportunity to add meaningful first-hand experience to learned degree-level Diploma knowledge.

Apart from looking good on your resume, your internship enables you to test drive your career path, build your practical skills, network directly with industry professionals and create graduate opportunities.

QRC’s Internship Team support students to prepare for internship. The team are well connected to New Zealand’s best tourism and hospitality companies and are able to identify workplace opportunities and create connections for the student.

Internship is completed during Term 2 and a minimum of 200 hours must be completed. Students are supported by the Internship Team throughout this period.

Industry Internship Project

Alongside the 200 hours work experience, students are required to complete an Industry Internship Project.

The Industry Internship Project helps students develop business planning and management skills by taking learned theoretical knowledge and applying it in a New Zealand workplace. Students are required to make a detailed analysis of a tourism and hospitality business project, such as a new product launch or market expansion, and determine its feasibility.

The project incorporates regular consultation with a project supervisor, progress reports, active research, a final report and presentation.

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

Have completed a Bachelor’s Degree preferably in a Commerce, Business or Management*

or

Evidence of equivalent practical and professional experience and knowledge
(Domestic applicants only)

and

Have an English level equivalent to Academic IELTS 6.0 (6.0 in speaking with no band less than 5.5) or a TOEFL iBT score of 60 (with a writing score of 18) or PTE overall score of 50, with no communication skills band scored below 42.

All applicants are interviewed as part of the admissions process. No Recognition of Prior Learning, cross credit or credit transfer is available for this programme.

*Students with a Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism or Hospitality Management may be accepted if it is considered that the programme can add extra dimensions to their previous study.
