Modern Computing Essentials

The aim of this micro credential is to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding in the fundamentals of modern computing. Learners will use computing essentials in business scenarios, describe and discuss computing algorithms in python, understand networking essentials, and apply computing essentials to networking scenarios.

Upon completion of the course, learners/ākonga will be able to:

  • Describe the core cloud computing components and their purposes
  • Construct and document Python algorithms
  • Connect cloud components using networking fundamentals

Graduates will be able to perform modern computing tasks both as part of a team, and independently under broad supervision. They will be able to apply the fundamentals of modern computing to entry level roles in the New Zealand tech, corporate, health, education sectors as:

  • Entry-level Cloud Administrator
  • Entry-level IT Support Specialist
  • Entry-level Cloud Security Analyst
  • Entry-level Cloud Sales Representative

Who is this course for?

Do I need to have a technical background?
  • No prior technical or AI knowledge is required.
  • English language or NCEA Level 2 is required.
What is the format of this course?
  • This course uses blended learning.
    • Compulsory 2-day in-person workshop in Queenstown, held on the first two days of your course (please note this 2-day work shop does not include accommodation or flights).
    • Followed by 5-weeks of online learning with tutor check-ins.
  • You will be assessed via weekly quizzes and an e-workbook relating to how you will use AI within a business problem.
How long is this course?
  • 3-weeks.
Is this course 100% online learning?
  • No – there is a 2-day in-person workshop (Queenstown or Auckland). Research has shown that blended delivery yields the best student outcome and learning outcome.
  • The 2-day in-person workshop will be held at the start of your course and is compulsory.
  • (Please note this 2-day work shop does not include accommodation or flights).
What’s the time commitment?
  • It is recommended that students allocate five hours per week of study to the course.
    • Two hours of online learning and three hours of self directed learning.
  • The online lectures are recorded, allowing students to listen at their convenience.
  • There will be a weekly tutorial session where students can check in and ask questions about coursework or assignments.
What if I have questions or need learning support during the course?
  • There is a weekly check in with the teaching team should you need help and forums to ask your questions.

  • New Zealand Domestic Students and Australian students: $640
  • International students: $3000
Entry requirements
  • 18 years+ at time of course.
  • A New Zealand or Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Applicants will be interviewed to ensure course suitability (digital literacy) and specific learner needs from a pastoral care perspective.
  • International students: If English is not your first language, evidence of competency in English is required: Achievement of NCEA Level 3 and met New Zealand University requirements, OR English proficiency of an IELTS score of 6 with no band less than 5.5 or Pearson Test of English score of 50 with no band score lower than 42 AND English proficiency outcome needs to have been achieved in the last two years before enrolment and in one sitting.
Is this open to International students?
  • Yes.
