Welcome pack
The countdown has begun, and we are looking forward to welcoming you to QRC! With only a few weeks to go until you will be living and studying here in Queenstown, we have put together a list of things you should know before you arrive.

What to bring to Queenstown
Queenstown is a beautiful 4 seasons resort, with temperatures ranging from well below zero in winter to over 30 degrees in the summer. Make sure you consider this when you are packing. If you will be studying during the winter season, we recommend bringing warm clothes such as woollen jumpers, a thick or insulated jacket, scarf, beanie etc. Our weather can be a little unpredictable so prepare for changeable weather, especially in autumn and spring. A rain jacket will come in handy as it can rain at any time of year.
If you are living at QRC Lodge and have clothes that you cannot fit into your suitcase and you wish to send them down, you are able to send them to:
QRC Lodge, 1 Sainsbury Road, Fernhill, Queenstown 9300.
Please clearly mark your name and your start date on the parcel so we know who it is for. If you are not staying at the lodge, please send them to the college address.
Before You Arrive:
Electrical Appliances:
It is a health and safety requirement that all your electrical appliances are checked and registered as safe by a certified electrical contractor. Appliances are considered any items that are plugged into a wall outlet.
You must have all items tested prior to arrival. Any overseas appliance must have an adaptor for New Zealand’s electrical current system
Health Matters:
It is a good idea to check you have received all the necessary immunizations against infectious diseases. Living in a communal situation means you may be more at risk of either infecting others or being infected.
Immunization to consider: Covid-19, measles, rubella, tetanus, polio, hepatitis B, meningitis etc. (subject to change). All health issues must have been disclosed on application and upon acceptance to Queenstown Resort College.
Emergency Preparedness:
For emergency preparedness you must have a small personal emergency kit (grab bag) that is kept in your room as per the following recommendations:
Minimum requirements:
- Emergency contact details – a written copy as well as next of kin listed on your cell phone.
- Torch and spare batteries
- Strong outdoor shoes
- Supply of personal medications
- Hand gel or antiseptic wipes
- Survival blanket
- Bottle of water
- Muesli bars or similar energy food
- Warm clothing (jacket or similar)
- Your cell phone if you have one
Additional extras that would be useful:
- Personal toiletry items
- Small plastic bags
- Whistle and light sticks
QRC Lodge – Halls of Residence
QRC Lodge is an awesome place to live.
If you are staying at the QRC Lodge don’t forget to bring the following:
- Bedding including duvet cover, duvet inner, pillow, sheets.
- Bathmat, towels & toilet paper
- Lodge residents are responsible for cleaning their rooms – cleaning kit is provided per accommodation wing.
- Laundry powder – coin operated student laundry onsite.
We appreciate that for many students this is the first move towards independent living. To make this transition as smooth as possible it is important to know how to do the basics! Ensure you are ready for lodge life & familiarise yourself prior to your arrival with:
- the laundry (clothing and bedding + ironing for uniform)
- good cleaning practice in shared spaces such as the kitchen and your bathroom.
- cooking a basic, healthy meal safely
Dinner is provided Sunday – Thursday (5 nights) and breakfast is provided each day. Students also have access to a fully equipped kitchen.
A copy of the Lodge Handbook is included in this pack so please ensure you have read all the conditions of your tenancy prior to signing the declaration form.
Money and Personal Expenses
It is important to have a budget in place prior to arriving at QRC. You need to know how you will meet your essential living costs (rent, food, medical costs etc) and and other expenses you may need.
Student Loans can be accessed through Studylink, if you are eligible, and can assist with up to $316.36 per week. We encourage you to apply for your loan well ahead of time as the process can be lengthy.
Queenstown has a $2 bus fare which will allow you to travel across the Queenstown area. This is an affordable option for travel to and from college.
QRC also has a student café located on the first floor of the college which offers a discount to all students.
Textbooks and course materials are included in your tuition fees but do allow some extra money for additional printing, copying etc. You will need to bring stationery (pen, notepad, and a scientific non-programmable calculator) and a laptop.
BYO Device
The specification for this is a recent model Windows laptop or a MacBook. Detailed requirements can be found HERE.
When you arrive in New Zealand, it’s recommended to have a small amount of New Zealand Dollars (NZD) on hand for initial purchases. Currency exchange services are available at all airports. Most shops in New Zealand accept cash, EFTPOS bank cards, and credit cards. If you don’t already have a bank account, QRC can assist you in setting one up.
Please note: In New Zealand, we drive on the left-hand side of the road, so be mindful of this if you plan to drive.
If you’d like to be picked up from the airport, please inform the admissions team, and we can arrange a meet and greet. Alternatively, you can book a shuttle online or catch a bus to QRC Lodge.

If you are wanting a student loan for your QRC tertiary studies then we encourage you to apply through Studylink for your loan well ahead of time as the process can be lengthy.
IMPORTANT: Accommodation allocation will be emailed to you 2 weeks before you enrol. The first 5-weeks rent is due 2-weeks before your move in date and QRC accounts will email you an invoice. Your living cost loan from Studylink is not paid to you until the 2nd week of the course.
Student Loans can be accessed through Studylink, and if you are eligible, can assist with your tuition fees and also provide a student loan for living costs to help with your accommodation.
You will need to:

3. Send in any documents we’ve requested using Connect.
Once they have everything they need, they confirm your enrolment details with QRC.
RealMe login is a secure service used by many government agencies and other organisations. It gives you a single login to multiple online services, and if you upgrade to a RealMe verified identity, it also works as your online ID.

All Students are supplied with a uniform (see detailed outline below) and this will be fitted during Orientation Week. We highly recommend purchasing your shoes prior to arriving in Queenstown and bringing these to your scheduled uniform fitting session during orientation. More details regarding footwear requirements can be found in this pack.
Uniforms are typically issued a week after your fitting session and please note you will be expected to dress in smart clothing while on campus until received. Please be sure to pack appropriate clothes to wear to college during orientation and your first weeks.
Once received, students are required to wear uniform Monday to Friday, while in class, traveling to and from QRC House, at official functions and excursions, as well as in front of house areas on campus.

Adventure Tourism Student are required to supply their own black socks and shoes (please see guideline below). It is also recommended that ATM students bring extreme weather gear for outdoor activities.
Hospitality management Students will need to supply smart black shoes (please see guideline below) and either black socks or sheer natural or black stockings when opting for the skirt. *A combination of 1 skirt/1 trouser or two of either the skirt or trousers can be opted for in the female uniform.

Please ensure you have read all the relevant terms and conditions regarding your enrolment into your programme of study at QRC and those surrounding your residence at the lodge prior to electronically signing the declaration at the end of the form.

You can pay your tuition fees by 2 options:
* Option 1 – Student loan through studylink
* Option 2 – Pay privately.
Option 1 – Student Loan
As a domestic student, you should be eligible for a student loan. You can apply for this through studylink’s website:

Once your application has been approved by Studylink, payment of your tuition fees will be made directly to QRC.
Option 2 – Pay privately
Alternatively, you can pay your tuition fees into the Public Trust account detail in the Payment Method tab.
Please use your student ID as the reference when making payment.
Payment Methods
QRC uses a Public Trust Student Fee Protect service to manage tuition fees. Fee Protect safeguards the money paid by you to your education provider. Public Trust will make payments to QRC over the duration of your course, in line with NZQA’s Student Fee Protection Rules and the Education and Training Act.
Tuition fees and any lump sum accommodation fees (or greater than 4 weeks in advance) need to be paid to Public Trust. Other payments can be paid directly to QRC.
