Internship Story – Tiana Whatarau

Tiana Whatarau

Take Off
Originally from  Ruatorea, Tiana Whatarau has always had a passion for working with people and keen interest to promote and raise the profile of Māori Tourism. After hearing from Future Student Advisor Sharman and attending Experience QRC, enrolling in the Diploma of Hospitality Management at QRC Tai Tokerau Resort Rollege (QRCTT) was an easy decision

The Flight
Her first two terms at QRCTT were a real “eye-opener”. The blend of management theory and practical application made it easy for her to understand all aspects about tourism and hospitality management operations. Her favourite class was Cultural Intelligence where she was given an overview of how to interact and liaise with groups and individuals from a range of different cultures.

Terms one and two also gave Tiana the confidence to move outside her comfort zone which resulted in her heading to the bottom of the South Island to undertake her 9-month fully paid internship. She started with Southern Discoveries in Tahuna (Queenstown) as a Reservation Consultant but has now been transferred out to Piopiotahi (Milford Sound) as a Frontline Consultant.

“I love Piopiotahi it is definitely a bucket list destination. I enjoy my co-workers and all the opportunities and experiences I’ve had as well as all the new skills I have learnt being here. Also being close to the water makes life good with the wildlife right outside the office.”

Travel Tips:
“My advice is to take advantage of every opportunity you’re given, even if it’s outside your comfort zone just give it a go! One of the best pieces of advice I was given was to just take some time to sit back, observe and look at where you’ve come in life and how you’ve got there. This was shared by one of my good mates from Milford who is now whanau to me.”
