Assistant Manager with Novotel Tanui

Sheyann Cook from Dargaville is a graduate from our Hospitality Management Diploma. Check out her epic story on how she got to where she is today!

Why did you choose to study Hospitality Management?

  • I chose hospitality because of the many opportunities it could offer me. Even if it meant I didn’t work specifically in hotels, there were a wide range of options available that this course could help me progress into.

Why did you choose to study with QRC?

  • I loved the fact that QRC offered a paid internship as part of the course. It offered a lot of hands-on learning and even the option to travel.

Where did you do your internship, what was your role there and what was something you learnt on internship?

  • I did my internship in Port Douglas at The Sheraton Grande Mirage Resort. I worked in the pool bar, the restaurant bar, the cocktail lounge and occasionally the restaurant. I learnt so much during my internship, but one thing I learnt is to always put yourself out there and take any opportunity as it comes.

Tell us about your journey post QRC – Where have you worked, travelled, studied? What have you been doing since QRC?

  • My QRC journey was awesome, I had the opportunity to study at both campuses in Paihia and Queenstown which lead to more opportunities while I was down there. Once I had completed my studies, I was approached by the CEO of the company Charlie who offered me a role to work at the Paihia campus as a Recruitment Coordinator. I enjoyed this position, and it really helped me develop and grow. I then continued with my travels and moved back to Australia where I worked at the Sofitel in the Events team. I then decided to continue my travels and head over to the UK and Europe but unfortunately that was cancelled by Covid. I then moved home and have been working at the Novotel Tainui since.

Where are you working now?

  • In the Novotel Tainui Hamilton as the Assistant Manager.

Any advice for students looking to study with QRC?

  • Don’t even think twice! I would definitely recommend this study path. If you are sitting in the fence, Experience QRC gives you a great insight to what you will be studying and the lifestyle.

Any exciting plans for the future?

  • I will definitely go back to travelling or possibly look into a job that offers the option to travel and work.

Any advice you have for the current QRC students?

  • Take every opportunity as it comes, even if it doesn’t work out you have more experience than you did the day before. If you have not yet been on your internship, make sure you put yourself out there. If you want to stand out or if you want to up-skill then offer to go in on your days off and learn. If you really want something, work for it and go for it. Don’t hold back!
