Meet Dana. She’s currently working at Oxbow Adventure Co. in Queenstown’s Gibbston Valley. Through her internship, she is developing valuable skills in the adventure tourism industry while working in a dynamic environment that combines thrilling outdoor experiences with top-tier customer service.
What’s a day in the life of Dana on internship look like?
A typical day during my internship at Oxbow starts with the team gathering in the morning and traveling together in a van to work. This gives us a chance to bond and chat before the day begins, which creates a positive and collaborative atmosphere. Once we arrive, we get all set up for the day and go over the schedule and any specific tasks or activities planned for the day.
My role involves assisting with customer interactions, ensuring a smooth check-in process, and helping guests prepare for their activities with briefing them, dressing them for activities and strapping them into the truck or boat.
Throughout the day, I get hands-on experience learning more about the logistics of each activity, sharing my knowledge of the area, and providing excellent customer service to enhance the guest experience.
Each day offers something new, offering me the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in my studies while gaining real-world experience in the adventure tourism industry.

What was a highlight from your internship?
One of the biggest highlights of my internship so far has been the opportunity to assist with the world’s only commercial jet sprint boat rides. Being involved in such a unique and high-adrenaline activity has been an incredible experience, and it’s not something many people get to be part of. I’ve had the chance to interact directly with guests before and after their rides, helping them prepare for the experience and hearing their excited feedback afterward. It’s rewarding to be part of something so unique, and it’s a great feeling knowing that I’ve contributed to creating lasting memories for visitors.
Additionally, getting to work closely with such a passionate and skilled team has been an invaluable part of my internship. Every day brings something new, and the chance to learn from experienced professionals in the adventure tourism industry has been an amazing experience.
How did the internship managers help you find your internship position?
My internship teacher was incredibly supportive throughout the entire process of finding my internship position. She provided guidance by helping me find businesses in the adventure tourism industry that aligned with my career interests and goals. She also offered advice on how to tailor my CV and cover letter to highlight my relevant skills and experience.
Once I had set my mind on Oxbow, Lizzie helped me with the application process, offering feedback and helping me refine my approach. She helped to ensure I was well prepared for interviews and discussions with the company. Overall, her support was super helpful in securing this internship, and I’m really grateful for the personalized guidance provided throughout the entire process.
Any tips or advice for students preparing for internship?
My biggest tip is to be proactive and open to learning. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek out new opportunities within the company. The more you engage, the more you’ll learn and grow. Everyone starts small in a business but there’s always an opportunity to grow.
What is one thing you have learnt on internship?
One of the most important things I’ve learned during my internship is the importance of balancing safety with customer experience in adventure tourism. Whether it’s clay target shooting, off-roading, or jet sprint boating, we ensure guests have an adrenaline-filled yet safe experience. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how critical safety protocols are, not just in terms of regulations, but also in building trust with guests.
Additionally, I’ve learned how important clear communication is when interacting with both customers and team members. When it comes to explaining the rules of an activity it’s important that everyone is on the same page, effective communication helps create a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
This internship has been a great learning experience, and I now appreciate the behind the scenes work that goes into making adventure tourism operations run efficiently and safely.

What’s the best thing about living in Queenstown?
