QRC Graduate wins New Zealand Wedding Planner of the year!

Amy Munn has always been a superstar within the Hospitality industry, working her way up to General Manager at the Luxury Lodge Eagle’s Nest. Now starting her very own Wedding Planning business and reaping the rewards and being named New Zealand Wedding Planner of the year for 2023. An awesome achievement for her and her business, read more about her QRC journey below!

Why did you choose to follow a career in hospitality?

  • I have always loved to organise and be in control of the end product. From my first attendance to a wedding I have loved the art of organising, creativity and a fast pace environment all in one place along with being able to me and work with people.

Why did you choose QRC?

  • I chose QRC as I had completed my degree in events management, but could not obtain work due to having lack of experience. QRC offered both hands on as well as written study. Gaining my experience along the way with full support of the staff.

What was the biggest “take away” from your internship experience?

  • My placement took place at the Copthorne Hotel and Resort. I think my biggest “take away” was how to recover when things go wrong. Having a plan B can change the way your guests look at you in a moment of panic.

Tell me about your journey since leaving QRC.

  • I graduated from QRC and moved into the Events Department at Millbrook Resort. Working within a small team to offer world class events over 3 different Venues. After 1.5 years in this role I moved into an Assistant Manager role, moving to General Manager of Luxury Lodge Eagles Nest. Over my time I have had the opportunity to not only run a property but also increase my skill set and travel to some amazing places while meeting some even better people.

What role are you in now?

  • My new and current role is Business Owner for my small business Platinum Events NZ. Currently operating a building new offerings within the North Island of New Zealand
  • I am the owner/operator of this business, Creating memories for all of my clients. Some of the daily tasks is Co-ordination, styling, planning and conversing with clients. Alongside marketing, accounts management, product and website management.

How did your time at QRC help prepare you for starting your own business?

  • QRC gave me the experience to move around different departments and learn a wide range of aspects of management and the day to day running of hospitality businesses.

What do you enjoy the most about owning your own business?

  • I am able to create my own pathway, I can manage and control each day dependent on the individual needs of my clients, I also don’t have one location or a day to day office. I get to move around to where I am needed.

What are your plans for the future?

  • I would like to expand and increase what I can do. This will include Venues, creating a business that people think of first for there events needs. Offering Exclusive Events and Priceless Memories.

What’s the best advice you were ever given?

  • A previous General Manager of mine once told me to, Not be afraid of hiring someone with more experience in an area then you. Your team is a representation of your end product. Being well rounded always offers the best result.

What advice would you give to your teenage self?

  • That the hard times are going to be the best builders. You have some curve balls coming but they will all lead to something that you would have never done following others paths
