Ileen Papworth.
After our partnership with Air NZ was announced, we sat down with the QRC x Air NZ Stars and found out more about their studies, post QRC life and what makes them tick! Read more about Current Term 6 Hospitality Students Ileen Papworth below!
Where are you from?
I spent my College years at Kaitaia College in the Far North this is where I attended a careers expo that the recruitment of QRC had put on. This followed “Experience QRC” where I got to experience what it was like to live at the halls of residence, study, and take a look at the opportunities they have at the campus.
What course are you studying?
I began with the Level 4 Certificate in Tourism Operations and further on went to study the Level 6 Diploma in Hospitality Management, which I am currently completing as a Term 6 student.
How did you find your first few months in Paihia and on campus?
Relaxed. Just getting used to the new area and people around me. Homesick, although home wasn’t far for me so I could go for regular visits to see family and friends and QRC has a great support system.
What’s it like living at the lodge?
I think it’s a good idea to reside at the lodge when studying here, everyone here is a great big whanau. It’s an environment that is close-knit where you can chill out, play games, have movie nights, pool competitions, let’s not forget the buffet!
What do you do for fun outside of QRC?
Outside of QRC, I go to the gym, go out to town with my friends, travel away to see my family and friends and of course, make time to study.
What has been a standout from your studies so far?
Going out on internship was great! I got to experience a new working environment in luxury which brought many opportunities for me. I made new friends, transferred to a sister lodge further south for mahi, and I got a promotion. Another standout was my Air New Zealand shoot that I had the pleasure of starring in to #GetToAmazingPlaces 🙂
Any advice for future students finishing up at high school and deciding what to do?
Get out there! Look at the opportunities in front of you, and what each one can do towards your future and career. Take risks, go outside your comfort zone, but – be prepared!
Where do you hope your QRC studies will lead you?
I hope with this diploma, it will expand my knowledge and eventually go on to owning my own business.
