Tourism isn’t only face to face roles

There is more to tourism & hospitality than what you might think. No longer is working in tourism only about front line staff, you might have the worlds “best” product, but how will you attract the tourists without a Sales & Marketing team? As Mikayla has found out, through her internship and graduate experiences her marketing career with Real NZ has kicked off with lots to learn and plenty of products to promote! Read more about Mikayla’s journey to Marketing Assistant with Real NZ.

Why did you choose QRC?
QRC was the ideal choice for me because it was the perfect mix of adventure, people, and travel. Not to mention it was in Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world. After attending Experience QRC, there was no looking back.

Where was your internship and where are you now?
I completed my internship at RealNZ (formerly Real Journeys) as a sales consultant in the Queenstown Visitor Centre. It was an awesome 6-month experience that led me to return after graduating QRC. I jumped around positions within the company working for the front line team, contact centre and Go Orange Jet Boat Kiosk. After a couple years, I managed to work my way up into my current position as a full-time Marketing Assistant.

QRC was great because it gave me a taste of all different aspects of the tourism industry. I quickly found out that Sales & Marketing was my favourite subject which swayed me onto my current Marketing path.

What are my main responsibilities?
My role has grown drastically over the past year to include management of our referral sites/RTOS, social media engagement, website updates, review responses, control of the marketing inboxes, sponsorship requests, promotion set-ups and social/digital ad creation. I work within the Digital Marketing team and am learning new things every day!

What’s the best advice you were ever given?
“If it won’t matter in 5 years, don’t worry about it for more than 5 minutes.’
